The chain, step by step
- Client pays the platform. On Upwork, a client funds a milestone or an hourly contract; the money sits with Upwork, not with you, until the work is approved and released (or, for hourly, until the standard weekly billing cycle processes). Fiverr works similarly — the buyer pays Fiverr up front, and funds clear to your Fiverr balance after the order is completed and any clearance period passes.
- Funds clear to your platform balance. Both platforms hold funds for a period after work is marked complete before making them available for withdrawal — this is a standard freelance-platform practice, not something specific to Nepal, and it's designed to give both sides a window to resolve disputes.
- You withdraw to a payout method. This is the step that matters most for Nepal. Upwork and Fiverr both list Payoneer as a supported withdrawal method for Nepal-based freelancers — see the full Payoneer setup guide. Some platforms also offer other payout options depending on your country and account type; check what's currently listed in your own account's payment settings, since platform-supported methods can change.
- Payoneer to your Nepali bank. Once funds land in your Payoneer balance, you withdraw to your linked Nepali bank account, as covered in the Payoneer guide.
Platform fees, in general terms
Upwork and Fiverr both take a service fee out of what the client pays before the balance reaches your account, and Payoneer may apply its own withdrawal fee on top when you move funds to your bank. We're intentionally not quoting specific percentages here — platform fee structures change periodically and differ by contract type and freelancer tier, so a number printed on this page risks being wrong by the time you read it. Check the current fee schedule inside your own Upwork/Fiverr account and Payoneer account before estimating your take-home amount on a contract.
Setting your rates with the full chain in mind
A common mistake for freelancers new to this chain is pricing a project based on the client-facing rate, without accounting for platform fees and payout fees stacking on top of each other. When you're quoting a rate, it's worth working backward from what you actually want to land in your Nepali bank account, not just what the client sees on the invoice.
PAN, invoicing, and tax records
Even though Upwork and Fiverr handle the client-facing invoicing, you're still the one responsible for your own Nepali tax position on that income. Keep your own record of what you were paid and when — platform statements plus Payoneer withdrawal records are generally enough to reconstruct your income history if you need it later. See the tax page for what's currently known (and clearly flagged as unconfirmed) about how foreign freelance income is taxed in Nepal.
If you're choosing between Upwork and Fiverr
This guide is not a platform comparison — both are workable ways to find international clients, and the get-paid mechanics described above apply to both once you've decided. If your work is with a direct client rather than through either platform, the payment chain is different (no platform escrow, no platform payout-method restriction) — see the bank wire transfer guide for that case, or use Payoneer directly if the client supports it.
