How to Get Paid from Abroad in Nepal (2026 Guide)

You just landed a foreign client — on Upwork, Fiverr, or directly — and now you need to get the money into Nepal legally, without losing a big chunk to fees, and without a tax surprise later. This is a plain-language map of the rails that actually work for a Nepal-based individual in 2026, and just as important, the ones that don't.

The short answer

For most Nepali freelancers and independent IT exporters, there are two rails worth taking seriously in 2026: Payoneer (the practical default for most freelancers, especially on Upwork/Fiverr) and a direct bank SWIFT wire transfer into your own Nepali bank account (better suited to larger, less frequent payments from direct clients). A few well-known global platforms — PayPal, Stripe, and Wise — are not usable for receiving money as a Nepal resident, for reasons explained below. Don't build a payment workflow around them.

Why this matters more than it looks like. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) — the central bank — regulates how foreign currency enters the country. A rail that isn't built for Nepal doesn't just "not work" — in some cases (PayPal, Stripe) it simply refuses Nepal-based recipients outright. Picking a rail that is not designed for Nepal wastes time on signup forms that will eventually reject you, or forces the money into an unclear or non-compliant channel. Start with what is actually confirmed to work.

The rails, at a glance

Payoneer

Works for Nepal-based individuals. Receives USD (and other currencies) into a Payoneer balance, then withdraws to your Nepali bank account. The default choice for most Upwork/Fiverr freelancers here. See the full Payoneer guide.

Bank SWIFT wire transfer

A direct client can wire USD straight to your Nepali bank account via SWIFT. Better for larger, occasional payments than for frequent small ones — and you need to get the paperwork right so the bank doesn't misclassify the inflow. See the bank wire guide.

PayPal — not usable

PayPal does not support payouts to Nepal-based accounts. If a client insists on PayPal, you will need to agree on a different rail — PayPal is not a workable option for receiving money in Nepal as of this writing.

Stripe — not usable

Stripe does not currently support Nepal as a country of operation. It is not usable for individuals or businesses based in Nepal to receive payouts.

Wise — not usable for receiving

Wise does not currently offer Nepal-resident receiving accounts, so it isn't usable as a primary rail for a Nepal-based freelancer to receive client payments. (Availability changes — confirm directly with Wise before relying on it.)

Skrill and other niche platforms

We have not independently verified current Nepal support for Skrill or similar platforms, so we're not recommending or covering them here. If a client proposes one, confirm Nepal-resident receiving support directly with the provider before agreeing.

How we cover platforms. We only publish a full guide for a rail once we're reasonably confident, from research grounded in public regulatory and industry sources, that it actually works for a Nepal-based individual. That's why this guide covers two rails in depth rather than five superficially — and why we tell you plainly when something doesn't work, even though we don't earn a commission from saying so.

Don't forget tax

Getting the money into Nepal is only half the job — you're also expected to declare and pay tax on foreign income as a Nepali taxpayer. This is the part most freelancers find out about too late. We cover what's publicly known (and clearly flag what's still unconfirmed) on the tax page.

Start here

  1. Read the Payoneer setup guide if you freelance on Upwork, Fiverr, or similar platforms.
  2. Read the bank wire guide if a direct client wants to wire you money.
  3. Read the Upwork/Fiverr payment chain guide to understand the full platform-to-bank flow.
  4. Read the tax page before you spend any of it.
